If you want to come from Finland it’s better to use the following areas in the northern Finland to pass the border:
1. Area of the city Kuusamo.
From Kuusamo to the border it’s at about 50 km. The turn from the main road is marked Paajarvi RUS. The Finnish point of crossing is called Kortesalmi.
Working hours of the border are from 08:00 to 20:00 (Finnish time) or from 09:00 to 21:00 (Moscow time).
There are practically no queues at the crossing point.
Two days before crossing the border, let us know about your plans. We need to call to crossing point and to prevent about your trip. It is necessary because veterinary control must be at the crossing point. If that day veterinary control is absent, you can be sent to another crossing point.
Further, you have to go at about 50 km till Paanajarvi. Here you can use Russian mobile operators Megafon and MTS. After Paanajarvi 8 km you have to go till the village Tungozero. Just before thevillage you must turn right and go round the village. Attention! There is no road sign. Right nearthe last house in the village Tungozero you will see the wide road at the right hand. Turn on 90 degrees. Till the Kalevala you have to go 72 km. Be careful! A lot of tight turnings with descents. Necessarily pay attention to restrictions of speed before abrupt turns. On this stretch of road mobile works only 14 km from the Kalevala. Be careful - it's Russian road. It is a lot of holes. Road without an asphalt covering.
After crossing the border in Russia the first motorway filling station is in the 5 km from the border. Working hours coincide with the working hours of the border. The second gas station is in the village Paajarvi. Working hours are: 08:00 - 21:00. Motorway filling station in Kalevala works twenty-four-hour.
2. Area of the city Kuhmo.
From Kuhmo till the border there are at least 100 km. The Finnish crossing point is called Vartius. The closest Russian city - Kostomuksha (Kostomus). Working hours of the border are from 08:00 to 20:00 (Finnish time) or from 09:00 to 21:00 (Moscow time). At the crossing point there are long queues. Please, always have 1.5 - 2 hours free. Veterinary control always works.
Further, you have to go at about 35 km till Kostomuksha. Here you can use Russian mobile operators Megafon and MTS. A lot of filling stations.
From Kostomuksha you need to depart in direction of the village Voknavolok. If you go from the border and you do not want to go through Kostomuksha, then at the traffic light you need to turn to the left. After 10 km along the main road you will see a sign "Kalevala 145 km". On the way to Kalevala you will pass Voknavolok (good mobile communications). Then, about 30 km to the village Voinitsa. Be careful! A lot of tight turnings with descents. In the village Voinitsa mobile communication does not work. Leaving the village Voinitsa you will see the last house. This is a roadside cafe. After a less than 100 meters there will be a sharp turn to the right. This is the road to Kalevala. There is a road sign "52 km till Kalevala". Mobile communication works just 15 km from the Kalevala.
You have entered to Kalevala. It does not matter through which checkpoint. Follow the main road for less than 2 km. There will be a crossroad. The main road curves to the left. You stay on it. Than pass less than 1 km. Right along the road there are three three-story house made of grey brick. Between the second and third house, turn right into the yards of these houses. You will see a 2-storey hotel "Welt". It is located on the shore of the lake. Go to the reception. Here you will get a card or escort to the tourist center "Welt," where the race will be. From the hotel you need to follow another 4 km.
